About The Thoughtful Shop
The Thoughtful Shop is a community shop and school uniform hub run by Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance. It has been created to support individuals and families who are struggling to afford everyday essentials due to the rising cost of living.
We understand that food poverty is about more than food. People often face wider pressures such as low income, debt, benefit changes, housing issues and unexpected life events. The Thoughtful Shop offers a dignified, supportive and practical way for people to access food, school uniform and essential items while also being connected to wider support.
The shop operates through the Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance referral system and a virtual credit scheme, ensuring support is fair, consistent and targeted to those who need it most.
The Thoughtful Shop is about more than food — it’s about stability, dignity and helping families get through difficult times.
What We Offer

How The Thoughtful Shop Works
Food Process
Access to The Thoughtful Shop is via Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance referral only.
Once referred:
- Customers are given a weekly virtual credit
- The credit can be used across multiple visits during that week
- Any unused credit does not roll over
- Bread and fresh vegetables are not included in virtual credit
Volunteers are available in the shop to:
- Explain how everything works
- Support customers to choose items
- Ensure the virtual credit is used correctly and fairly

Making a Referral
Agency & Partner Referrals
Registered partner organisations, schools and support workers can refer individuals and families at any time via the DF4TA online referral portal (we ask that you do not use the customer request support form).
This ensures:
- The correct level of support is provided
- Information is handled safely and securely
- Customers receive consistent support across services

Request Support (Self-Referral)
If you are struggling and feel The Thoughtful Shop may be the right support for you, you can complete a Request Support form .
This request will be reviewed by Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance and where appropriate. You may be offered access to The Thoughtful Shop, or signposted to another service that better meets your needs.
Walk In Support
We encourage all customers to request support before attending, as this allows us to prepare and provide a quicker service. However, if you arrive without a referral, a volunteer can help you complete the request in the shop. Please be aware that walk-in visitors will need to be assessed for eligibility before support can be provided, and if the shop is busy you may be asked to wait until a volunteer is available. To avoid waiting, it is always quicker to submit a request in advance of your visit.
Support for Households Needing Both Food and School Uniform
If your household needs support with both food and school uniform, you will only need to complete one referral. Please make sure to mention this when you speak with us, so volunteers can coordinate support across both services. This helps us plan and ensure your family receives the right items from each service. Volunteers will work with you to schedule appointments and collections, but please be aware that each service may require a separate eligibility check. Letting us know in advance helps us provide support quickly and fairly to all families.

- A text message or message from another organisation is not a referral
- Referrals must be confirmed through Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance referral process
- Access to the shop is time-limited and reviewed regularly
- Support may change depending on individual circumstances and availability
